MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A cold front will push showers and thunderstorms across Tennessee starting Friday afternoon, with the heaviest rainfall expected overnight into Saturday morning. Drivers along I-40, especially south of the highway, could see up to an inch of rain.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, most of west Tennessee will pick up at least a tenth of an inch, enough to dampen roads and potentially slow down travel. Rain chances climb steadily Friday evening as the front sweeps in from the west.
Areas near Jackson, Bolivar, and Selmer are most likely to see higher totals, while lighter rainfall is expected north of I-40. Thunderstorms could briefly produce heavy downpours, lowering visibility for late-night drivers and increasing the risk of ponding on highways.
Residents are urged to keep devices charged in case of isolated power outages and to avoid driving through standing water. Outdoor events scheduled Friday night may face delays or cancellations.
The wet pattern lingers into Saturday morning before skies begin to clear. More updates from the National Weather Service are expected if rainfall totals climb higher than forecast.
