Melbourne, Florida – Beach conditions across East Central Florida are turning hazardous today as persistent onshore winds elevate the risk of rip currents, even as temperatures climb into the low to mid-70s under mostly cloudy skies.

Tuesday will be slightly warmer than recent days across Brevard County, with Melbourne expected to reach around 74 degrees this afternoon. Despite the mild temperatures, conditions along the coast warrant caution. A moderate risk of rip currents is in effect for all Atlantic-facing beaches across Volusia, Brevard, and the Treasure Coast.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, isolated to scattered showers will develop throughout the day, mainly affecting the Treasure Coast and areas near Lake Okeechobee. Much of the Melbourne metro area will remain mostly dry, but cloud cover will be persistent. An east to northeast breeze will continue, helping to generate choppy surf conditions.

Rip currents are expected to be strong enough to pose a threat even to experienced swimmers. Surf heights of 3 to 4 feet are forecast, creating dangerous nearshore currents that can quickly pull swimmers away from shore. Officials stress that rip currents can form even on days that appear calm or sunny.

Beachgoers are strongly encouraged to swim near staffed lifeguard stands and avoid entering the water alone. Those caught in a rip current should remain calm, float to conserve energy, and swim parallel to the shoreline to escape the current rather than attempting to fight it directly.

Away from the coast, inland cities such as Orlando, Sanford, and Kissimmee will see highs in the low 70s, while coastal communities including Melbourne and Daytona Beach stay slightly cooler due to the onshore flow. Winds will remain breezy at times, adding a cooler feel despite the mild air temperatures.

The rip current risk is expected to persist through the day, and residents should continue monitoring beach conditions before heading out. While today’s weather may look inviting, officials emphasize that ocean conditions can be deceptively dangerous.

Additional beach hazards statements may be issued if winds or surf increase. Visitors and locals alike are urged to take water safety seriously and check local advisories before entering the ocean.
