Melbourne, FL – Residents across Melbourne and east central Florida are waking up to a cold and windy start to the week, with conditions posing potential travel and outdoor safety concerns Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, frigid wind chills greeted drivers early Monday as moderate northwest winds pushed apparent temperatures well below actual readings. While skies will remain mostly sunny, afternoon highs are expected to only reach the upper 50s to low 60s, well below seasonal averages.

The colder start may lead to reduced tire traction on bridges and elevated roadways during the early morning commute, particularly in shaded areas. Breezy conditions could also affect high-profile vehicles traveling along I-95, U.S. 1, and State Road A1A, especially near coastal areas.

Forecast highs across the region include:

  • Melbourne: near 60°
  • Orlando: around 58°
  • Daytona Beach: near 55°
  • Vero Beach: around 62°

In addition to roadway concerns, the National Weather Service has issued a Moderate Rip Current Risk for all central Florida Atlantic beaches, including the Space Coast, Volusia Coast, and Treasure Coast. Surf of 2 to 4 feet combined with offshore winds can make swimming dangerous, even under sunny skies.

Officials urge beachgoers to swim near lifeguards or avoid entering the water altogether. Drivers heading to coastal areas should also be cautious of blowing sand and reduced visibility at times.

While temperatures will gradually moderate later in the week, officials stress that Monday morning and midday pose the greatest safety risks due to cold winds and coastal hazards.

Residents are encouraged to dress in layers, secure loose outdoor items, and stay alert to changing conditions.
