Mega 7.0 Earthquake Off California and Oregon Coast Felt by 11,000, Tsunami Warning Issued

Eureka, CA – A massive 7.0 earthquake struck off Northern California’s coast near Cape Mendocino on Thursday, shaking over 11,000 people who reported feeling the tremor. The quake hit at 12:44 p.m., about 45 miles southwest of Eureka at a depth of 0.6 kilometers.

A tsunami warning has been issued for coastal areas in California and Oregon, including San Francisco. The National Tsunami Warning Center stated the warning will remain in effect from Davenport, California, to the Douglas/Lane County line in Oregon until further notice. The tsunami wave is expected to reach San Francisco at approximately 12:10 p.m. local time.

Police in Berkeley, California, have issued an evacuation order for parts of West Berkeley “due to a tsunami coming to the area.” Residents are urged to move to higher ground and avoid low-lying areas.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported strong shaking near Eureka and Humboldt County, rated intensity VII. Thousands of residents described swaying buildings, rattling furniture, and minor disruptions. Experts warn of potential aftershocks, with a 34% chance of a magnitude 5.0 or higher quake in the next week.

Officials urge residents to remain alert for further updates and to follow evacuation orders where applicable.
