Medford, Oregon – Active weather is expected to continue across southern Oregon and northern California as the region heads toward the New Year, with fog, rain, snow, and strong winds highlighted in the latest forecast timeline.

According to the National Weather Service in Medford, an Air Stagnation Advisory remains in effect through Wednesday, Dec. 31, with fog and freezing fog impacting westside valleys and the lower Klamath Basin. No precipitation is expected through the end of the year, but reduced visibility and slick conditions remain a concern in valley locations.

In Medford and Grants Pass, fog may linger through the morning hours, while freezing fog creates hazardous travel conditions in colder valleys. Officials urge drivers to use caution during overnight and early morning travel.

A more active pattern develops beginning Thursday through Sunday, Jan. 1–4. The National Weather Service reports increasing chances for moderate to heavy rain, especially across southern coastal areas and Siskiyou County. Snow chances will also rise across the Cascades, western Siskiyou Mountains, and the Mount Shasta area, with snow levels lowering to around 4,300 feet.

In Yreka and Mount Shasta, California, snow and rain could create slick travel conditions on mountain passes. Meanwhile, strong winds are expected across northern California and eastside areas, adding to potential travel disruptions.

While widespread flooding is not expected at this time, forecasters caution that isolated nuisance flooding may occur in areas receiving heavier rainfall.

Looking ahead to Jan. 5–8, forecast confidence decreases, but probabilities are increasing for heavy rain, heavy snow, and strong winds across the region.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service as conditions evolve and impacts become clearer heading into early January.
