Richmond, Va. – A grand jury indicted eight people in a deadly I-85 shooting in Mecklenburg County.
According to Virginia State Police, the Mecklenburg County Grand Jury on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026, handed down eight felony indictments against Jason A. Glidewell, 22, of Bracey.
The indictments include first-degree murder, two counts of use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, felony homicide, shooting a firearm from a vehicle, malicious shooting at a vehicle, reckless handling of a firearm, and unlawfully shooting or wounding a person while committing a felony. Glidewell allegedly faces the charges in connection with a fatal shooting last summer along Interstate 85.
State police said the incident occurred at approximately 3:47 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2025, along northbound I-85 near the five-mile marker in Mecklenburg County. Troopers responding to reports of a shooting located a Honda Civic that had run off the right side of the roadway and come to rest in a culvert.
The driver, identified as Hunter A. Bates, 20, formerly of Colonial Heights, was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to authorities, Glidewell was taken into custody without incident on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2025, and initially charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in connection with the shooting. The grand jury indictments expand the charges.
Glidewell remains in custody at the Meherrin River Regional Jail.
The shooting disrupted northbound travel on I-85, a key corridor for regional commuters and commercial drivers.
