McLean, IL – Residents in McLean County are prohibited from open burning this week as fire officials issue a temporary ban due to dangerous weather conditions.
According to Fire Chief Eric Fulk of the Mt. Hope-Funks Grove Fire Protection District, the prohibition began Tuesday, September 16, 2025, and will remain in place through Monday evening, September 22, 2025. The restriction could be extended another seven days if dry conditions persist.
Chief Fulk said the order was issued under the district’s Ordinance No. 14-01 to prevent an “unreasonable risk of fire” in the area. The department warned that anyone caught burning in violation of the ban may be charged if firefighters are required to respond. Those charges fall under Section 8.20 of the Illinois Fire Protection District Act and the local ordinance.
The district, which covers Mt. Hope and Funks Grove townships in McLean County, has experienced elevated fire danger in recent weeks due to dry weather. Fire officials are urging residents to comply with the temporary ban to reduce the risk of wildfires and keep emergency resources available.
