McHenry County, IL – Authorities are warning residents about a new phone scam where callers impersonate Sheriff’s Office employees and demand bond payments over the phone.
According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, scammers are using local 815 area code numbers and even the real names of sheriff’s staff to appear legitimate. The callers tell victims they missed a court date, claim there is a warrant for their arrest, and then pressure them to make bond payments by phone.
The Sheriff’s Office stressed that it will never call residents to inform them of a warrant or request payment, fines, or gift cards over the phone. Officials say anyone receiving these calls should hang up immediately and never share financial or personal information.
“These scammers are using very convincing tactics,” the Sheriff’s Office stated in a public alert. “We want to make sure residents know we will never demand bond money or payment by phone.”
Law enforcement is urging the public to spread the warning to protect family, friends, and neighbors from falling victim. Residents who receive one of these fraudulent calls are encouraged to contact local authorities and report the incident.
