Marengo, IL – A late-night crash in unincorporated McHenry County left one person dead and another seriously injured Monday night, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred around 9:00 p.m. on October 13 in the 22800 block of River Road near Marengo. Deputies, along with the Marengo Police Department and Marengo Fire Protection District, responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash involving a 2011 Toyota Prius.

According to the sheriff’s office, the Prius was traveling westbound when it failed to navigate a curve, veering off the roadway to the north. The vehicle struck a tree and a post before catching fire near a nearby garage.

Officials said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger was transported to Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford with serious injuries.

The Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office are investigating the cause of the crash. Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved pending family notification.

Residents in the area reported emergency crews blocking River Road for several hours Monday night as the scene was cleared and investigators collected evidence.
