McHenry County, IL – A 69-year-old bicyclist from Cary was critically injured Tuesday evening after being struck by a car near the intersection of Silver Lake Road and Killarney Drive in unincorporated Cary, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the crash occurred around 5:45 p.m. on October 7 when a 2015 Honda Civic, driven by a 26-year-old man from Crystal Lake, was traveling southbound on Silver Lake Road. Preliminary findings indicate the bicyclist entered the roadway from Killarney Drive and failed to stop or yield at a stop sign before being struck.

The impact ejected the bicyclist from his bike, and he sustained critical injuries. According to the Sheriff’s Office, he was first taken by ambulance to a local hospital and later airlifted to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for advanced care.

Deputies said the driver of the Honda Civic is cooperating fully with investigators. The intersection where the crash occurred is controlled by a stop sign for Killarney Drive only.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Major Crash Investigation Unit continues to investigate the incident.
