Kahului, Hawaii – Flooding is already impacting parts of Maui this evening, with additional heavy rain expected to move in over the next few hours, keeping roads and low-lying areas at risk through 10:30 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, a Flood Advisory remains in effect for all of Maui County as bands of moderate to locally heavy rain continue to redevelop from the south. While rainfall briefly eased earlier this evening, new waves are expected to push back across the island, increasing runoff and localized flooding.

Communities including Kahului, Kihei, Lahaina, Wailuku, and Paia are already seeing impacts in poor drainage areas and along roadways. In upcountry locations like Kula, Makawao, and Pukalani, runoff from higher elevations may quickly flow into lower areas, creating sudden water buildup. Coastal zones such as Wailea and Maalaea also face ponding on roads during heavier bursts.

Drivers should expect reduced visibility and water-covered roads, especially along Hana Highway and areas near streams. Even shallow flooding can stall vehicles or hide debris.

Residents are urged to stay away from streams, drainage ditches, and flood-prone roadways. Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas. Keep alert for rapidly changing conditions as additional rain bands move in.

A broader Flood Watch remains in effect through Sunday, and this advisory could be extended if heavy rain persists into the night.
