Kahului, Hawaii – Roads across Maui are rapidly flooding late Saturday night as rainfall rates reach up to 3 inches per hour, triggering closures in Lahaina, Kahului, and Wailuku within minutes.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, a Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 1:45 a.m. Sunday for the entire island of Maui. Radar shows heavy showers and thunderstorms expanding island-wide, with additional bands continuing to move north and redevelop overnight. Saturated ground from earlier rain is accelerating runoff, pushing streams and drainage systems toward dangerous levels.

Emergency officials report multiple road closures, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas, while steep terrain raises the خطر of rock and mudslides along highways and rural routes. water can rise quickly in gulches and streams, even in areas that appeared dry earlier in the evening.

Residents are urged to avoid all floodwaters and stay off roads unless absolutely necessary. Never attempt to drive through flooded streets, and remain alert overnight when visibility is lowest and hazards are harder to detect.

Flooding may persist beyond 1:45 a.m. Sunday if heavy rain continues, and additional warnings or extensions are likely as conditions evolve.
