Boston, MA – A significant winter storm is set to hit north-central and western Massachusetts on Tuesday, bringing heavy, wet snow and potentially dangerous travel conditions from the morning commute through early Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 7 a.m. Tuesday to 7 a.m. Wednesday for Eastern and Western Franklin counties, Northern Worcester County, Northwest Middlesex County, and the eastern slopes of the Berkshires. Forecasters expect 6–9 inches of heavy, dense snow across the region.

The snow is expected to cause widespread travel difficulties as visibility drops and roads become slick during both the morning and evening commutes. According to the NWS, the weight of the wet snow could also lead to downed tree limbs and powerlines, increasing the risk of scattered power outages across higher elevations and rural communities.

Areas including Greenfield, Orange, Fitchburg, Ayer, Chesterfield, Charlemont, and Blandford are likely to see the most significant impacts, with steady snow continuing through Tuesday evening before tapering off early Wednesday.

Forecasters warn that the combination of wet snow and gusty winds could create hazardous road conditions, especially on untreated or secondary roads. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel when possible. If travel is essential, officials recommend reducing speed, allowing extra time, and preparing for sudden changes in visibility.

Residents should also ensure vehicles are winter-ready and keep an emergency kit on hand, including food, water, and a flashlight.

The storm marks one of the season’s first widespread snowfall events for western and north-central Massachusetts, with officials advising close monitoring of updated forecasts as conditions evolve.
