Boston, Massachusetts – A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 7 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. EST Saturday for portions of central Connecticut and western Massachusetts, with heavy snow expected to create hazardous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton.
The warning covers Hartford County in Connecticut and Western Hampden County in Massachusetts, including the cities of Hartford, Windsor Locks, and Blandford.
Forecasters say total snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches are expected across the warned areas. Snowfall will intensify Friday evening, with conditions deteriorating rapidly after sunset.
The National Weather Service warns that travel could be very difficult, particularly during the Friday evening commute, as roads become snow-covered and visibility decreases. Snow-covered pavement and reduced traction are expected to persist overnight into Saturday morning.
While specific snowfall rates were not provided, officials caution that steady snowfall over several hours will be sufficient to cause dangerous driving conditions, especially on untreated roads. Bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads may become slick early in the event.
Residents are urged to delay travel if possible. Those who must drive are advised to use extreme caution and carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water, in case of delays or breakdowns.
The Winter Storm Warning was upgraded from a winter weather advisory earlier Friday as confidence increased in heavier snowfall totals.
The warning is scheduled to expire at 10 a.m. EST Saturday, though lingering snow-covered roads may continue to impact travel into the late morning hours, particularly in areas that receive higher snowfall totals.
Drivers are encouraged to monitor local road conditions and stay alert for updates from state and local transportation agencies as the storm moves through the region.
