Greenfield, MA – Heavy snow continues to blanket portions of western and north-central Massachusetts early this morning, creating hazardous driving conditions ahead of the Wednesday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday for Franklin, Worcester, Middlesex, Hampshire, and Hampden counties. Snowfall totals between 3 and 10 inches have been reported, with the highest accumulations in the higher terrain north of I-90.

Communities including Greenfield, Orange, Fitchburg, Ayer, Barre, Charlemont, Chesterfield, and Blandford continue to see periods of moderate to heavy snow in the pre-dawn hours. Forecasters say roads will remain slick, with snow-covered surfaces making travel slow and potentially dangerous.

The timing of the storm will impact many early commuters, especially along Route 2, the Massachusetts Turnpike corridor, and secondary roads in the hill towns. Snow is expected to taper off after sunrise, but lingering slick spots may persist into mid-morning.

Officials urge anyone traveling this morning to reduce speed, allow extra braking distance, and carry essential emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight.
