Boston, Massachusetts – Snow and sleet will begin coating roads across northern Massachusetts by late Friday morning, creating slick travel conditions that could peak during the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. Friday until 7 a.m. Saturday for communities north of the Massachusetts Turnpike. Forecasters expect 3 to 6 inches of snow and sleet, along with a light glaze of ice.
The heaviest accumulation is likely across Franklin, Worcester, Middlesex and Essex counties, including Greenfield, Fitchburg, Lowell, Lawrence, Gloucester and Cambridge. Roads such as I-495, Route 2 and I-93 could turn snow-covered and slippery by late afternoon, with reduced visibility during steadier bursts.
While ice totals are expected to remain light, even a thin glaze can create hazardous travel on bridges and untreated secondary roads. Transportation officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance and consider delaying nonessential trips Friday night. Residents should charge devices and prepare for isolated power interruptions where wet snow clings to tree limbs.
The advisory continues through early Saturday morning, and additional updates may be issued if snowfall rates increase overnight.
