Boston, Massachusetts – A surge of summer heat and severe weather will slam much of Massachusetts on Tuesday, bringing dangerous storms, damaging winds, and the risk of flash flooding, especially along major highways like I-90 and Route 128.

According to the National Weather Service, isolated strong to severe storms are expected Tuesday afternoon and evening, with the greatest risk from Springfield to Worcester and up into metro Boston. Torrential downpours could quickly flood streets and low-lying areas, while wind gusts may bring down tree limbs and power lines. If you’re traveling after 2 p.m., expect changing road conditions and avoid driving through flooded intersections.

Emergency officials urge residents to monitor alerts, charge phones, and have flashlights ready in case of power outages. Outdoor plans should be moved indoors by midday. Damaging wind gusts and brief street flooding are possible, especially in urban centers and along the Mass Pike (I-90) and I-91 corridors.

Tuesday’s storms come on the heels of an extended heat advisory that expired Monday night, with “feels like” temperatures hitting 100°F in several communities. Although a cold front will drop temperatures slightly by Wednesday, the air will stay humid, and more rounds of showers could follow through the week.

Rain lingers Tuesday night, then partial clearing and lower humidity arrive for midweek. The heat rebuilds by Friday and Saturday, so keep water handy and limit strenuous activity outdoors.

Five-Day Detailed Forecast (Boston Area):

  • Tuesday: Showers and thunderstorms, some severe after 4 p.m. High: 91°F. Damaging winds and flash flooding possible.
  • Wednesday: Mostly cloudy, chance of showers. High: 76°F. Humidity drops in the afternoon.
  • Thursday: Cloudy early, chance of showers. High: 73°F.
  • Friday: Partly sunny, warmer again. High: 80°F.
  • Saturday: Summer heat returns, partly cloudy. High: 86°F.
