Boston, Massachusetts – Winter officially begins Sunday with the arrival of the Winter Solstice, and colder conditions moving into Massachusetts are prompting renewed calls for winter preparedness across the state. Fluctuating temperatures around freezing increase the risk of frozen pipes, icy roadways, and home damage, particularly in older buildings common throughout eastern Massachusetts.

According to the National Weather Service and the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, frozen and burst pipes remain one of the leading causes of winter property damage each year. Fire officials continue to warn residents never to use blowtorches, propane heaters, or any open flame to thaw frozen pipes due to the risk of fires and carbon monoxide exposure.

In Boston and surrounding communities, residents are encouraged to insulate exposed plumbing in basements, crawl spaces, exterior walls, and unheated areas. Letting faucets drip during cold nights, opening cabinet doors near sinks, sealing drafts, and keeping thermostats set no lower than the mid-50s can help reduce the chance of freezing, even during brief cold snaps.

Winter preparedness also extends to travel. Overnight refreezing can create black ice on untreated streets, bridges, and highway ramps, especially during early morning commutes.

State officials say winter hazards will persist well beyond Sunday as the season progresses, with additional cold spells likely. Residents are urged to stay informed, review winter safety plans, and remain alert for updated advisories as winter settles in across Massachusetts.
