Boston, MA – The coldest air of the season is set to move across Massachusetts tonight, with widespread frost and below-freezing temperatures expected in many areas away from the coast, according to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton.

Forecasters say a strong high-pressure system will settle over New England, sending overnight lows into the upper 20s and low 30s across interior regions such as Worcester, Springfield, and Greenfield. Temperatures closer to the coast—including Boston, Providence, and Hyannis—should stay a few degrees warmer, though frost may still develop in sheltered areas.

According to the NWS, temperatures today will remain below normal, with afternoon highs in the 50s before quickly dropping after sunset. The agency warns that the combination of clear skies, calm winds, and dry air will create ideal conditions for frost formation overnight.

Residents are urged to protect sensitive plants, crops, and outdoor plumbing before temperatures plunge late Thursday night into early Friday morning. The frost threat is expected to ease by mid-morning Friday as temperatures climb back above freezing.

Meteorologists note that this marks the first widespread frost of the fall season for much of New England, signaling a decisive shift toward colder weather heading into mid-October.
