Massachusetts is expected to see a brief moderation in temperatures heading into Valentine’s Day weekend, though the winter pattern will remain unsettled with periods of rain or snow possible from Feb. 14 through Feb. 20.

High temperatures on Valentine’s Day are forecast to linger in the low to mid-30s across much of the state, with some coastal and urban areas potentially rising a few degrees higher. While this represents a modest warmup compared to recent Arctic cold, temperatures will remain near seasonal averages for mid-February.

Forecast models indicate a series of weak disturbances tracking through the region during the period, bringing intermittent chances for precipitation. Depending on timing and surface temperatures, precipitation may fall as snow inland, while rain or a rain-snow mix is more likely across eastern Massachusetts and along the coast. Minor accumulations are possible at times, particularly overnight and during early morning hours when temperatures dip closer to freezing.

No single storm is expected to dominate the period, but repeated chances for light precipitation could lead to slippery travel at times, especially on untreated roads, bridges and overpasses. Drivers are urged to remain alert for changing conditions during the morning and evening commute.

Overnight lows are expected to fall into the 20s statewide, allowing for refreezing of any melted snow or standing water. Gusty winds at times may also contribute to colder wind chills, particularly across higher elevations and exposed coastal areas.

Residents planning Valentine’s Day travel or outdoor activities should monitor updated forecasts through the weekend, as small temperature changes could significantly impact precipitation type and road conditions through the upcoming week.
