Boston, MA – Drivers across Massachusetts should prepare for slippery roads Tuesday as a period of accumulating snow moves in during the morning and continues into the evening, impacting one of the busiest travel weeks of the year.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, confidence is increasing that much of interior Massachusetts will see 1 to 3 inches of snowfall, with localized totals near 4 inches in higher terrain. Snowfall amounts will be lower along the south coast, where around an inch or less is expected.
Forecasters say snow will begin Tuesday morning, gradually spreading across the region before tapering off by Tuesday evening. While most areas will see snow, precipitation may mix with or briefly change to rain south and east of the Interstate 95 corridor, which could limit accumulations closer to the coast.
The highest snowfall totals are expected in inland communities across Worcester County, Franklin County, and the higher elevations of western and central Massachusetts, including areas near the Berkshires. The Boston metro area is expected to see lighter totals but could still experience slick conditions during peak commute hours.
The National Weather Service warns that slippery travel conditions will develop, especially during the morning and evening commutes. Even modest snowfall could lead to slowdowns on major roadways, including Interstate 90 (Mass Pike), I-93, and I-95.
Residents are encouraged to allow extra travel time, reduce speeds, and stay updated on local forecasts as snowfall amounts may vary by location. Air travelers should also monitor flight status, as minor delays are possible.
