Massachusetts – Damp pavement glistens under gray skies as winter regains control across southern New England. Mild air fades quickly, and a sharper January chill settles in as the region heads toward Friday.
Cold air continues pressing south from Canada, and temperatures trend steadily downward through Thursday night. In the Providence and Norton area, highs today linger in the low 50s, but clouds thicken and showers develop tonight. Rain may mix with snow late, especially inland, as temperatures slide toward the upper 30s.
By Thursday, the shift becomes more noticeable. Skies brighten at times, yet colder air dominates. Highs struggle near the low 40s. Winds turn northwest and increase, pulling in much colder air by evening. Snow showers become possible late Thursday night, with lows dropping into the mid-teens inland and upper teens near Providence.
Friday delivers the core of this Winter Weather pattern. Sunshine returns, but it comes with biting cold. Highs hover near 32 degrees, and gusts may exceed 30 mph. Any moisture left on roads could freeze quickly, creating pockets of black ice during the morning commute. Drivers should slow down and allow extra stopping distance.
Friday night stays cold and quiet, with lows in the mid-20s. The weekend turns more unsettled. Saturday brings a chance of rain, mixing with snow at times, as temperatures rebound into the low 40s. As colder air slips back in Saturday night, rain may flip to snow before tapering off.
Sunday remains cold and mostly cloudy, with highs in the mid-30s and occasional snow showers. Travel impacts look minor for now, but timing will matter.
Looking ahead to Jan. 19–23, NOAA outlooks suggest near-normal temperatures with precipitation chances increasing again across southern New England.
Heading out early Friday? Watch for icy spots. How slick were roads in your neighborhood?
