Boston, Massachusetts – Light snow is expected to develop late New Year’s Eve and continue into early New Year’s Day, creating slick travel conditions across much of southern New England.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, snow will begin between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. tonight (New Year’s Eve) as an arctic front moves through the region. Snow is expected to end early Thursday morning, with lingering slick spots into New Year’s Day.

Snowfall amounts are forecast to range from a coating to 1 inch for most areas, with 1 to 2 inches south and east of Interstate 95. Higher totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected across Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket, where a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 7 p.m. tonight through 1 p.m. Thursday.

The steadiest snowfall is expected between midnight and 6 a.m., coinciding with overnight travel and early New Year’s Day commuting hours. Ocean-enhanced snow showers may briefly increase snowfall rates near the coast.

Drivers should use caution along major roadways including Interstate 95, Route 128, Interstate 93, Interstate 90 (Mass Pike), U.S. Route 6 on Cape Cod, and local coastal roads. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces are most likely to become slick.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Thursday morning into the afternoon as snowfall tapers off and crews treat roadways.

This weather alert may affect New Year’s Eve travelers, overnight workers, and early New Year’s Day commuters across Massachusetts and southern New England.
