Brisk air and clear skies early this morning won’t last long as another quick-moving system targets Eastern Massachusetts midweek. By Wednesday, clouds will thicken and snow will begin falling across the Boston–North Shore corridor, creating slick spots during the evening commute before changing to rain overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, snow is expected to begin late Wednesday morning through evening, bringing 1 to 2 inches of accumulation across interior areas before warmer air causes a changeover to rain along the coast. South winds will increase through the day, gusting up to 25 mph, creating low visibility and slushy roads across Route 128 and I-95.
Temperatures will climb from the upper 20s early Wednesday to the mid-40s by evening, keeping roads wet but reducing snow cover near Boston and Salem. However, colder air returns behind the system late Thursday, potentially refreezing untreated surfaces. Commuters should remain cautious, especially during early-morning hours when wet pavement could quickly freeze.
Friday brings relief with sunshine and lighter winds, but temperatures will remain well below normal. Long-range models hint at another possible snow chance around Dec. 14–16 as colder Arctic air grips the Northeast — part of a broader early-winter pattern sweeping across New England and the Great Lakes.
Residents should plan for slower travel Wednesday, monitor local advisories, and allow extra time during the rain-to-snow transition.
