Boston, Massachusetts – An intense Arctic blast is set to deliver life-threatening cold and powerful winds across Massachusetts beginning Friday, creating hazardous conditions that could persist through the weekend and into early next week. The cold will be widespread and dangerous, affecting both inland communities and the coast, with wind chills plunging well below zero.
According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts could exceed 45 to 50 mph from Friday into Sunday, driving wind chills into the negative teens and 20s across much of the state. In central and western Massachusetts, wind chills could drop even lower, approaching 30 below zero during the coldest overnight periods. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in minutes under these conditions.
Snow showers and brief snow squalls are possible as Arctic air pours into the region, especially Friday night into Saturday. While widespread heavy snow is not expected statewide, sudden bursts of snow combined with strong winds could sharply reduce visibility and create slick conditions on major roadways, bridges, and overpasses. Travel impacts are most likely during overnight and early morning hours.
The prolonged cold poses a serious threat to homes and infrastructure. Residents are urged to wrap exposed pipes, open cabinet doors, and allow faucets to drip to prevent frozen plumbing. Strong winds may also cause scattered power outages, making it critical to charge devices and ensure backup heat sources are ready. Pets should be brought indoors, and time spent outside should be kept to a minimum.
The most dangerous conditions are expected from Friday night through the weekend, with only gradual improvement possible by Monday. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued as the Arctic cold remains firmly in place across Massachusetts.
