Greenfield, MA – A mix of freezing rain and icy conditions is expected to create hazardous travel across parts of western and central Massachusetts through late Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Sunday for Franklin, Worcester, Hampshire, and Middlesex counties, including the cities of Greenfield, Fitchburg, Ayer, Chesterfield, and Orange. The advisory began at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Up to two-tenths of an inch of ice could accumulate across the affected regions. This may result in slippery roads, especially untreated surfaces, along with an elevated risk of downed power lines or outages in rural and elevated areas.

Drivers are urged to slow down and allow extra time for travel, particularly on secondary roads and bridges where ice tends to form quickly. The advisory also warns residents to prepare for possible power outages and keep emergency supplies on hand.

Temperatures are expected to hover near freezing through the early morning hours of Sunday before a gradual warm-up begins. This storm follows a relatively mild March, making the sudden ice threat unusual for late in the month.
