Boston, Massachusetts – A powerful surge of arctic air is expected to push into Massachusetts late this week, bringing the coldest temperatures of the season so far and creating dangerous conditions statewide. Overnight lows are expected to fall near 2 degrees below zero in parts of the region, while daytime highs struggle to climb out of the single digits through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service, the coldest stretch is expected from Saturday through Tuesday as a deep trough locks frigid air over New England. Gusty northwest winds will drive wind chills down to between 15 and 25 degrees below zero at times, particularly overnight and during the early morning hours when frostbite can develop quickly on exposed skin.

The harshest conditions are expected across interior Massachusetts, including Worcester County, Franklin County, and the Merrimack Valley, though coastal communities such as Boston and the North Shore will also feel the bite of the cold. Periodic snow showers and blowing snow could create slick conditions on Interstate 90, Interstate 93, and Route 2, especially during nighttime travel.

State officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and ensure pets are brought indoors. Homeowners should protect exposed pipes and check heating systems, while drivers are encouraged to keep winter emergency kits in vehicles.

The deep freeze is expected to persist through Tuesday, with additional wind chill advisories or warnings likely as confidence increases.
