Boston, Massachusetts – A shifting frontal boundary could determine who sees plowable snow and who gets cold rain across southern New England beginning late Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, an active but low-confidence pattern will bring on-and-off precipitation through the end of the week. The first round is expected to arrive late Wednesday morning into early afternoon. Areas along and north of the boundary, especially higher terrain in northern Massachusetts including Worcester County and the Berkshires, carry a 30 to 60 percent chance of 3 inches or more of snow.

Farther south, including Boston, Providence, Hartford and much of Rhode Island and coastal Connecticut, precipitation is more likely to fall as a chilly rain. Small shifts in the boundary could significantly change snowfall amounts and precipitation type.

Additional rounds of precipitation are possible Friday into the weekend, though timing and exact impacts remain uncertain. Snow and rain chances increase again Friday afternoon into Saturday across much of Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Drivers should prepare for potentially slick roads Wednesday afternoon and evening, especially north and west of I-95. Forecast updates are likely as confidence increases in storm track and temperature placement.
