Boston, Massachusetts – A late-season cold surge will drive overnight temperatures near or below freezing across Massachusetts, creating widespread frost risks and the potential for slick travel during early morning hours.
According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, below-normal temperatures will persist across the state through early next week, running 5 to 15 degrees below seasonal averages. While precipitation remains near normal, colder air will allow for winter-like impacts to develop.
Boston is expected to fall to near 32°F between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m., with colder inland areas dipping into the upper 20s. Cities including Worcester, Springfield, and Lowell will see widespread frost, especially away from the immediate coastline where ocean influence is limited.
Across western Massachusetts and higher elevations, light snow showers are possible at times, while central and eastern areas could see brief periods of rain mixing with wet snow or isolated freezing rain on untreated surfaces. Major routes including I-90, I-91, and I-495 could see slick spots during early travel hours.
Residents should protect sensitive plants, cover outdoor vegetation, and allow extra time for the morning commute. This colder pattern will persist through early next week, with additional advisories possible as freezing conditions continue.
