Boston, Mass. – Gusty northeast winds are set to batter Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket from late Thursday afternoon through early Friday as Hurricane Erin moves well offshore. The National Weather Service warns that gusts could reach 50 mph, raising concerns for travel and power disruptions.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, a Wind Advisory will remain in effect until 2 p.m. Friday. Sustained winds of 15 to 30 mph are expected, with peak gusts topping 45 to 50 mph. Officials urge residents to secure outdoor objects and caution drivers of high-profile vehicles crossing bridges or traveling along Route 6 and ferry terminals.
Ferry service between Hyannis, Vineyard Haven, and Nantucket could see delays or cancellations due to rough seas. Isolated power outages may also occur as tree limbs weaken in the gusty conditions. Emergency officials recommend charging devices and avoiding non-essential travel overnight into Friday morning.
Winds are forecast to ease by Friday afternoon as Erin tracks farther out into the Atlantic. Additional advisories could be issued if stronger bands approach coastal Massachusetts.
