Boston, MA – Snow is piling up at rates that will bury roads and knock out power across eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island as wind gusts up to 75 mph drive blinding whiteouts through 7 a.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect for much of eastern, central, and southeastern Massachusetts, all of Rhode Island, and northern Connecticut. Additional snowfall of 14 to 21 inches is expected across the Boston metro, Providence, and the South Shore. Central and western Massachusetts could see 8 to 18 inches, while Hartford, Tolland, and Windham counties in Connecticut face 8 to 15 inches. Nantucket and Cape Cod may add 7 to 10 inches, with peak gusts reaching 75 mph along the coast.
Visibility will frequently drop below a quarter mile. I-90, I-95, Route 24, and Route 3 could become impassable as snow drifts across lanes. The combination of heavy snow and extreme wind raises the threat of widespread tree damage and scattered to numerous power outages, especially in coastal communities from Quincy and Plymouth to Newport and Block Island.
Officials urge residents to avoid travel except for emergencies. Charge devices, secure outdoor items, and prepare for extended outages.
Blizzard conditions will continue through the overnight hours into early Tuesday morning, with the most dangerous travel conditions expected during both Monday commutes. Additional utility and travel advisories remain likely as the storm intensifies.
