Hartford, Connecticut – Drivers across northern Connecticut and much of Massachusetts should prepare for slick roads beginning at noon Tuesday, as snow, sleet and freezing rain develop ahead of the evening commute and linger into early Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Weather Advisory runs from noon Tuesday until 7 a.m. Wednesday for Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties in Connecticut; northwest Rhode Island; and western, central and northeastern Massachusetts, including Worcester, Springfield, Lowell and Cambridge. Snow and sleet totals will stay under 1 inch, but ice accumulation up to one tenth of an inch could create hazardous travel.
Interstates 84, 90 and 91, along with Route 2 and I-495, may become slick during the Tuesday evening drive. Elevated surfaces and untreated secondary roads in Worcester County, the Pioneer Valley and northern Middlesex County are especially vulnerable to icing overnight as temperatures hover near freezing.
Drivers should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance and prepare for slower travel both Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. Sidewalks and parking lots may also turn icy.
The advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday, and additional updates are possible if colder air prolongs icing into the morning commute.
