A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 7 p.m. Sunday for portions of southeastern Massachusetts and southern Rhode Island, as light snow continues to create slippery travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton.
Forecasters say additional snowfall of up to 2 inches is possible before the advisory expires this evening. While snowfall rates are expected to remain light, the combination of snow-covered roads and cold pavement temperatures will make travel hazardous, particularly during the late afternoon and early evening hours.
The advisory includes southern Bristol and southern Plymouth Counties, as well as Barnstable County, Dukes County, Nantucket, and Block Island, Rhode Island. Communities affected include New Bedford, Fall River, Falmouth, Chatham, Provincetown, Vineyard Haven, Nantucket, and New Shoreham.
According to the National Weather Service, roads may become slick quickly, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads. Even minor accumulations can significantly impact travel in coastal areas, where temperatures hover near freezing.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach their destinations. Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks and parking lots, where snow and slush may accumulate.
Although the advisory is set to expire this evening, officials warn that cold temperatures overnight could allow lingering moisture to refreeze, leading to icy patches early Monday morning.
Residents are encouraged to check local road conditions through state transportation services and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of active snowfall.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve later tonight as snow tapers off, but officials stress continued caution until roads are fully treated.
