PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Gusts rattle signs and scatter the last of the fall leaves across wet streets as the day begins under clearing skies. The early morning Wind Advisory remains in effect through 8 a.m. for much of southern New England, with gusts nearing 50 mph still possible along the coast and higher ridges. Once the winds calm, the region will enjoy a brief stretch of late-fall sunshine before rain moves in by Friday evening.

The National Weather Service in Norton, Massachusetts, reports that northwest winds will ease through midmorning as high pressure builds in. Sunshine and dry air will dominate through today, with highs near 50°F and a cool northwest breeze. By Friday, a southwesterly wind will draw in milder air, sending highs into the mid-50s across Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts.

That warmth, however, signals change. Clouds will thicken late Friday as a new storm system approaches from the Great Lakes. Expect a steady rain Friday night through early Saturday, with 60–80% precipitation chances and pockets of moderate rainfall near the I-95 corridor from Boston to Providence. While no flooding is expected, slick roads could slow evening travel and early weekend events.

By Saturday afternoon, the rain tapers to spotty drizzle before cooler air sweeps in behind the front. Sunday remains partly cloudy with highs near 60°F, followed by another system Sunday night that may bring showers and gusty winds into Monday morning.

Looking ahead, a crisp Veterans Day Tuesday is expected with sunshine and highs near 48°F — a brief calm before a larger-scale cold snap expected to drop temperatures below freezing across New England by mid-next week.

Residents should secure outdoor decorations, prepare for wet roads Friday evening, and stay alert for sharp temperature swings heading into next week’s November chill.
