Massachusetts – Cold air stings exposed skin, exhaust hangs low, and streets sound hollow under sub-freezing winds. Conditions may look quiet now, but a powerful winter storm is lining up to deliver one of the most disruptive snow events of the season across southern New England.

According to the National Weather Service in Norton, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through mid-morning with wind chills as low as 15 below zero. A Winter Storm Warning follows from Sunday morning through Monday evening. Heavy snow is expected, with widespread totals between 13 and 19 inches across parts of Massachusetts, northern Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Wind gusts may reach 35 mph.

In Rhode Island, including Providence, snow develops quickly Sunday and becomes heavy at times. Roads will turn snow-covered and slick, especially bridges and overpasses. Visibility will drop during heavier bands, making travel extremely difficult. Conditions may deteriorate rapidly by Sunday afternoon and remain hazardous into the Monday commute.

Across eastern and central Massachusetts, snowfall rates may overwhelm plow operations. Even treated roads could refreeze as temperatures stay below freezing. Flash freezing is a major concern where snow briefly compacts or melts during the day.

Residents should plan to delay travel if possible. If travel is unavoidable, carry emergency supplies and allow extra time. Check on vulnerable neighbors and limit time outdoors as bitter cold lingers behind the storm.

Cold weather holds through midweek. NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook signals below-normal temperatures across New England, while precipitation chances trend lower after this system exits.
