Boston, Massachusetts – Strong south winds are sweeping across eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island Friday morning, creating hazardous travel conditions and increasing the risk of downed trees and power outages through the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston and Norton, a High Wind Warning is in effect from mid-morning through midafternoon for much of eastern and southeastern Massachusetts as well as northern and southern Rhode Island. Sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph. Inland areas including Brockton, Taunton, and Providence will also see gusts near 60 mph despite slightly lower sustained wind speeds.
The strongest impacts are expected along the coast and exposed locations, including Boston, Quincy, Gloucester, Plymouth, New Bedford, Fall River, Newport, Narragansett, and across Cape Cod and the Islands. Ferry operations, bridges, and open roadways may be affected as crosswinds intensify. Power companies are preparing for scattered outages as tree limbs and power lines come down.
Drivers of high profile vehicles are urged to use caution, especially on coastal highways and elevated roadways. Residents should secure outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during peak wind conditions.
The High Wind Warning remains in effect until midafternoon Friday, with winds expected to gradually ease later in the day. Some power restoration and cleanup efforts may continue into the evening as conditions improve.
