Massachusetts – Southern New England is under an elevated fire weather warning today, with warm temperatures and extremely dry conditions heightening the risk of wildfire spread. The National Weather Service has issued this alert as temperatures are expected to reach near-record highs of 70-80°F across much of the region, further drying the area’s vegetation. Winds could gust at 15 mph, adding to the concern.
According to the National Weather Service, this unseasonably warm weather combined with dry ground conditions means any sparks or open flames could spread quickly. Residents should avoid outdoor burning and ensure any potential fire sources are fully extinguished. Authorities are advising extreme caution with cigarettes, fireworks, or any equipment that could create sparks.
Today, temperatures in the Boston and Worcester areas are expected to reach the upper 70s, and relative humidity will drop to between 40% and 50%, especially during afternoon hours when the fire risk will be most acute. While no formal bans are in place, officials stress the importance of public cooperation to prevent wildfires in these conditions.
The warm, dry spell is expected to ease only slightly by Friday, with another mild day in store. Cooler temperatures will return by Sunday, bringing relief to the current dry conditions. Until then, residents across Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut should heed the elevated fire risk and take precautions.
