Boston, Massachusetts – Snowfall across much of southern New England is expected to create hazardous travel conditions from Sunday morning through early Monday, as a widespread Winter Weather Advisory takes effect across Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and northern Connecticut.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, the advisory runs from 7 a.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. EST Monday and covers central, eastern, western, and southeast Massachusetts, all of Rhode Island, and Hartford, Tolland, and Windham counties in Connecticut.
Forecasters expect 3 to 6 inches of snow across eastern and central Massachusetts and Rhode Island, with localized amounts up to 7 inches possible, including the Boston metro area. Across western and north-central Massachusetts and north-central Connecticut, snowfall totals are forecast between 2 and 5 inches.
Periods of light snow are expected to develop Sunday morning and continue at times through the afternoon. The National Weather Service warns that the heaviest snowfall will occur late Sunday afternoon and Sunday night, when snowfall rates may exceed one inch per hour, significantly reducing visibility and making roads slippery.
While the steadiest snow should taper off by daybreak Monday, snow showers may linger into the Monday morning commute, prolonging travel impacts. Roads, bridges, and overpasses are expected to become slick, particularly during the overnight hours.
Communities affected include Boston, Worcester, Cambridge, Quincy, Lowell, Brockton, Providence, Warwick, Hartford, Springfield, and New Bedford, along with surrounding suburbs and rural areas.
Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time, especially Sunday night and early Monday. Conditions may vary significantly over short distances as heavier snow bands move through the region.
