Boston, MA – The National Weather Service in Boston/Norton has issued a High Wind Watch for southern New England, including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and northern Connecticut, in effect from Wednesday evening through Thursday morning.
Forecasters warn of west winds between 25 and 40 mph, with gusts up to 65–70 mph, strongest along Cape Cod, the Islands, and Block Island. Inland areas—including Hartford, Worcester, Springfield, and Boston—could see gusts between 55 and 65 mph overnight.
According to the National Weather Service, the most intense winds will occur between 10 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. Thursday, as a strong storm system sweeps through the region. Tree damage, downed power lines, and widespread outages are possible, along with dangerous travel for high-profile vehicles.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, stay indoors during peak gusts, and charge devices ahead of possible power losses. Coastal areas may also experience minor flooding and hazardous marine conditions during the storm’s peak.
Officials advise monitoring local forecasts for updates as the watch may be upgraded to a High Wind Warning if conditions intensify. Winds are expected to gradually diminish by midday Thursday.
