Boston, Mass. – A hurricane warning is in effect for offshore waters east of Cape Cod and south of Georges Bank, where hurricane-force winds and massive seas are expected through Friday. Mariners face extremely dangerous conditions with waves reaching nearly 50 feet and winds topping 75 knots.

According to the National Weather Service’s Ocean Prediction Center, the most treacherous conditions are expected overnight into Friday morning as winds shift from the northeast to north. Seas could climb as high as 49 feet, creating life-threatening hazards for vessels beyond 20 miles offshore.

By Friday afternoon, winds are forecast to ease slightly to 25 to 50 knots, though seas will remain between 27 and 42 feet. Showers and thunderstorms will continue to reduce visibility, further complicating navigation. The storm begins to weaken late Friday into Saturday, but seas will still measure 10 to 16 feet before gradually subsiding.

Mariners are urged to remain in port or seek safe harbor until conditions improve. Travel across offshore shipping lanes will remain hazardous into Saturday morning, with calmer seas and lighter winds not expected until late weekend.

Warnings remain in effect, and additional marine advisories may follow as the storm system tracks northeast.
