Boston, Mass. – Dangerous marine conditions are taking hold across southern New England waters as strong northeast winds and high seas build today, with gale warnings in effect through Friday evening. The National Weather Service warns mariners to expect gusts up to 40 knots and seas climbing as high as 18 feet in the most exposed offshore zones.
According to the National Weather Service in Norton, warnings cover Cape Cod Bay, Nantucket Sound, Buzzards Bay, Rhode Island Sound, Block Island Sound, and offshore waters stretching from Montauk to Provincetown. Conditions will deteriorate quickly this morning, peaking late Thursday into Friday before gradually easing Friday night.
Ferry routes from Hyannis, Woods Hole, and New Bedford to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard may see delays or cancellations, while small craft should remain docked. Even larger vessels could face difficulty in 14- to 18-foot seas south of Block Island and Martha’s Vineyard. Coastal impacts are expected to remain minor, but mariners are urged to seek safe harbor, alter plans, and avoid venturing offshore.
Hazardous conditions will persist until at least Friday evening, with the possibility of additional advisories if winds remain elevated into the weekend.
