Boston, Mass. – Mariners across Massachusetts and Rhode Island coastal waters have a narrow window to prepare before freezing spray begins coating decks and rigging by 1 a.m. Monday, increasing the risk of mechanical failure and vessel instability before sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Freezing Spray Advisory remains in effect from 1 a.m. until 10 a.m. EST Monday for Cape Cod Bay, Nantucket Sound, Vineyard Sound, Buzzards Bay, Rhode Island Sound, Block Island Sound, and Massachusetts Bay including Ipswich Bay. Moderate ice accumulation is expected as cold air moves over relatively warmer waters.

Freezing spray can quickly build on railings, antennas and superstructures, adding weight and affecting balance, especially on smaller commercial and recreational vessels. Ice may also interfere with navigation lights and electronic equipment during the critical early-morning hours.

The U.S. Coast Guard urges mariners to keep life-saving equipment free of ice and consider postponing departures until conditions improve. Inexperienced operators face the highest risk during overnight operations.

Conditions should gradually improve after 10 a.m. Monday as temperatures rise, but any lingering ice may take time to clear. Mariners should monitor additional statements in case advisories are extended.
