Boston, Mass. – Boaters south of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket have hours to secure vessels before north winds strengthen to 25 knots tonight and freezing spray begins coating decks by 1 a.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Small Craft Advisory remains in effect from 9 p.m. Sunday until 1 p.m. Monday for coastal waters extending 20 to 25 nautical miles south of Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and Block Island. A Freezing Spray Advisory runs from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday as moderate ice accumulation develops on exposed surfaces.

North winds between 10 and 20 knots will build seas to 3 to 5 feet overnight. The combination of wind, waves and subfreezing air will allow ice to form on decks, railings and rigging, increasing the risk of instability. Mechanical and electronic components may become inoperative if ice buildup intensifies.

The U.S. Coast Guard urges mariners to ensure life-saving equipment remains ice-free and to consider delaying departures. Inexperienced operators and those in smaller vessels face the highest risk.

Conditions begin improving after 10 a.m., though rough seas may linger into early afternoon. Additional marine advisories could follow if winds strengthen further.
