Boston, MA – Heat grips southern New England this week, with dangerous conditions expected in Boston, Worcester, Hartford, Providence, and surrounding cities as the heat index climbs to 100° through 7 p.m. Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, a Heat Advisory covers much of Massachusetts, northern Connecticut, and Rhode Island from 11 a.m. Tuesday until Thursday evening. Affected counties include Suffolk, Bristol, Worcester, Hampden, Plymouth, Middlesex, Essex, and Hampden in Massachusetts; Hartford, Tolland, and Windham in Connecticut; and Providence, Kent, Newport, and Washington counties in Rhode Island.

Health officials warn that heat and humidity could lead to heat illnesses, especially for vulnerable groups and anyone spending extended time outdoors. City cooling centers are open in Boston and Providence, while local agencies urge residents to limit outdoor activity during midday, check on neighbors and the elderly, and stay hydrated.

Travelers on I-95, I-91, and the Mass Pike may face increased emergency response calls due to heat stress or vehicle breakdowns. Regional power demand is also expected to spike, raising the risk for scattered outages.

The advisory remains in effect through 7 p.m. Thursday, with additional alerts possible if heat persists.
