Boston, MA – Residents across eastern and central Massachusetts should prepare for dangerously high heat and humidity through the start of next week, with heat index values nearing 100° expected from Sunday morning through 8 p.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a heat advisory includes cities such as Boston, Worcester, Lowell, Springfield, Cambridge, and Lawrence, with the highest risk for heat-related illness occurring Monday afternoon. Temperatures will climb into the mid-90s, and when combined with elevated humidity, the “feels like” temperature will approach triple digits.
The advisory excludes the Berkshires and coastal areas like the Cape and Islands, but inland Massachusetts will see the brunt of the heat. Public health officials are urging residents to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and use air conditioning when possible.
Local cooling centers are expected to open in Boston, Springfield, and Worcester by Sunday morning. This could be Massachusetts’ hottest weather of the season so far, topping recent June heat spikes.
More advisories or warnings could be issued if the high heat lingers into Tuesday.
