Boston, Massachusetts – Southern New England faces a dangerous wave of heat Thursday as triple-digit heat index values threaten millions from Hartford and Providence to Boston and Springfield. Sweltering temperatures and high humidity are expected to push “feels-like” readings between 95 and 100 degrees, raising the risk for heat-related illness across cities and suburbs.
According to the National Weather Service, a Heat Advisory covers nearly all of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island—excluding the Berkshires and Cape and Islands—until 7 p.m. Thursday. The warning includes Hartford, Boston, Providence, Worcester, Lowell, New Bedford, and dozens more communities.
Increased risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke is expected, especially for seniors, children, and those without access to air conditioning. Local agencies urge residents to stay indoors, limit strenuous activities, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Schools and outdoor programs may adjust schedules, while local cooling centers are opening across the region.
Hydrate frequently, avoid sun exposure during peak afternoon hours, and never leave pets or children in vehicles. Utility officials warn of potential power strain as air conditioning use soars.
The advisory remains in effect through 7 p.m., with relief expected overnight as temperatures gradually ease. More heat advisories could return this weekend if the pattern persists.
