Boston, MA – An elevated fire risk is in place today across much of Massachusetts due to ongoing dry conditions and low humidity. Residents near key roadways like Route 2 and I-495 are urged to use caution when disposing of ignition sources as the wildfire danger remains high. The National Weather Service warns that low relative humidity, between 30 and 45 percent, paired with very dry fuels, will increase the chance of wildfires.

According to the NWS, these conditions will continue through the weekend. The risk is particularly significant on Friday and Saturday, when northwest winds could gust as high as 20 mph, potentially spreading any sparks or flames rapidly. People are encouraged to avoid outdoor burning, properly extinguish cigarettes, and be cautious with machinery that could produce sparks.

Looking ahead, the dry spell is expected to last into early next week. Saturday and Sunday will bring slightly cooler temperatures, with highs reaching the mid-50s. The fire danger may ease slightly by Tuesday when a warming trend will bring temperatures back into the 60s, but dry conditions could continue.

Residents should remain alert and monitor weather updates, especially with Halloween approaching next Thursday. Trick-or-treaters can expect above-average temperatures, but fire risks will persist if the dry spell doesn’t break. Authorities recommend keeping an eye on official fire danger alerts, especially in forested areas near major roadways.
