Providence, R.I. – Dense fog blanketing southeastern Massachusetts and much of coastal Rhode Island could slow down Friday’s morning commute, especially along the South Shore, Cape Cod, and the Islands.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, visibilities have dropped to as low as a quarter-mile in some locations, including areas near Fall River, New Bedford, and Narragansett. The fog is expected to linger through at least 9 a.m., with visibility ranging from a half-mile to two miles in many spots.
Drivers on Route 3, I-195, and along coastal roadways near Plymouth, Falmouth, and Newport should anticipate sudden changes in visibility. Use of low-beam headlights and increased following distance is advised during early morning travel.
While no major delays or closures have been reported as of 5 a.m., local authorities urge caution. Ferry services between the Cape and Islands may also experience minor delays due to reduced visibility.
This is a common late-spring pattern as warm, moist air moves over cooler ocean waters, but the intensity of today’s fog has made conditions more hazardous than usual.
Fog is expected to lift by mid-morning, but motorists should remain alert during their morning commute. Updates will follow if visibility fails to improve.
