Springfield, Massachusetts – Residents across Western Massachusetts should brace for elevated ozone pollution on Wednesday, with air quality expected to reach unhealthy levels for sensitive groups between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, an Air Quality Alert is now in effect for Hampden and Hampshire counties, including Springfield, Amherst, Northampton, Chesterfield, and Blandford. Ground-level ozone concentrations could approach or exceed thresholds considered unsafe for children, older adults, and anyone with asthma, lung, or heart conditions.

People in these groups are strongly encouraged to limit outdoor activity and avoid strenuous exercise outside during peak hours. If you must be outdoors, take frequent breaks indoors, stay hydrated, and monitor symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath. Schools and summer programs should consider moving recess or athletic activities indoors.

This marks one of the summer’s first major air quality alerts for the region, driven by warm temperatures and stagnant conditions trapping pollutants near the ground. Similar events have occurred during July heat waves in previous years.

The Air Quality Alert is scheduled to end by 11 p.m. Wednesday, but additional advisories could be issued if conditions persist. For the latest updates, visit the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection website or follow local NWS channels.
