Mason City, IA – Emergency crews responded to a rollover crash in Mason City late Wednesday morning after a driver reportedly suffered a medical issue, sending one person to the hospital and prompting a child welfare response.
According to the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred Wednesday at approximately 10:29 a.m. near Jonquil Avenue and 275th Street in Mason City, Cerro Gordo County.
Authorities said a black 2021 BMW X3, driven by Desirae Thompson, 37, of Clear Lake, was traveling south on Jonquil Avenue when the driver experienced a medical condition. The vehicle crossed the center line, entered the east-side ditch, and rolled at least one full rotation, coming to rest on its top in a field.
Clear Lake Fire Rescue and Clear Lake Ambulance were dispatched to the scene. Thompson was removed from the vehicle and transported to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. Airbags in the SUV had deployed.
Investigators noted that a 4-year-old child was inside the vehicle at the time of the crash and appeared to be properly secured. The child was not injured. According to the sheriff’s office, the child was initially transported to the hospital by deputies and was later released to the child’s father.
The Iowa State Patrol also assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation by the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office.
